This bug is still present in Xubuntu 16.04.1. It is not specific to nVidia or DisplayPort hardware.
If I power off the Sony TV to which the Xubuntu machine is connected via HDMI, when the TV is powered on there is no signal to the TV. Restarting lightdm will return video output, but not audio. I am using embedded Intel graphics.
