I installed the xenial kernel and that did not freeze my laptop anymore.
So after using that xenial kernel for 3 days or so, I decided to upgrade
to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The upgrade FAILED (while updrading mysql server)
and left my laptop unrecoverable (because the entire disk was encrypted
and it was not booting anymore either), so I had to wipe my laptop clean
and install from scratch Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which does not freeze my
laptop anymore. So much about Ubuntu upgrade process...
