As I just got the computer, I did not try any other kernel/distro so
far.

I'm trying out the v4.8 kernel now, and this issue seems to be fixed -- thanks 
for the hint!
I will test it over the day some more, and mark it 'kernel-fixed-upstream' if 
all is fine. 

There is some other weird behavior with this kernel though: the computer
makes audible noises when under load, something like a very high pitched
whisper (so no fan) that I have never had with the default 16.04 kernel.
