I am using ubuntu-packages. In the Community Forums, someone suggested that they could launch OOo from the terminal. I tried that with no success. It mentioned a "fork" error. I am too new to know what that means; sorry. It appears, from what I am reading elsewhere, that there is a conflict with the fglrx driver and the OOo ubuntu-packages. If the driver is disabled, OOo will work flawlessly. Upon reinstalling the driver, OOo will not load. I am now using the generic video driver, not the fglrx driver. If I understand correctly, the problem is well known by now; I just didn't know that in my original post.
