Public bug reported:
Description:
(from debian/control)
Description: Snowball stemming algorithms for use in Information Retrieval
Snowball provides access to efficient algorithms for calculating a
"stemmed" form of a word. This is a form with most of the common
morphological endings removed; hopefully representing a common
linguistic base form. This is most useful in building search engines
and information retrieval software; for example, a search with stemming
enabled should be able to find a document containing "cycling" given the
query "cycles".
.
Snowball provides algorithms for several (mainly European) languages.
It also provides access to the classic Porter stemming algorithm for
English: although this has been superseded by an improved algorithm, the
original algorithm may be of interest to information retrieval
researchers wishing to reproduce results of earlier experiments.
Rationale:
appstream 0.10 has an (optional) dependency on libstemmer, to provide for
higher-quality searching through appstream metadata that is available.
This feature is enabled by default. Disabling it would take appstream out of
sync and, in my opinion, would be a shame as we'd reduce the quality of the
library's search results.
Analysis of the package:
libstemmer is a small package (Installed-Size: 381 kB) with few external
dependencies (Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4)).
It's in sync and doesn't see very many uploads.
The packaging is relatively clean - showing its age slightly due to the
aforementioned stability, but nothing to worry about. It runs its testsuite
during the build, and has an autopkgtest. (I've just triggered that so we can
check it still works.)
Maintainance:
The desktop team will maintain, since it will be dependency of one of our
projects. I subscribed us to the bugs.
