Looks like there are tests that aren't being run in the form of 'make -f 
makefile.shared stest; ./stest'

There are three test binaries: test, mtest, and stest.

'test' and 'mtest' don't act like normal automated tests.  They don't
return a non-zero value on failure.  'test' doesn't seem to return very
quickly (I didn't wait long).

But the stest binary is different.  It returns -1 on failure and
finishes quickly.

I don't know why upstream's test framework is so spotty or why they make
it so hard.  But it's sitting there, we should use it.
