There's not any newer stable release, and hasn't been for 6 years. The PPA shown above packages an SVN snapshot for ubuntu and I've been using it for a while without any problems. It fixes the DooM crash too. In my opinion it would be better to get that PPA package included in the main repositories instead. There're too many changes and fixes on it, and little hope to see an official stable release soon.
