Public bug reported:

In my terminal

    $> cat /etc/hostname
    alien
    $>

The above output seems to indicate that `0x0a` is the final byte of this
file, an ordinary Unix newline.

    $> hexdump /etc/hostname
    0000000 6c61 6569 0a6e

Here it seems that the file, in two-byte words, is being displayed with
each pair of bytes reversed.

In other words, hexdump is defaulting to the wrong endianness.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
