I expierenced this with Fiesty also.
Here's the workaround:

start kobo with
kobodl -nosound

when kobo starts,  create a player (just give it a name like AAA), then hit OK
Then choose Options, then choose Audio
And make the settings like this:
Enable Sound: Yes
Sample Rate: 48kHz
Sound Latency: 50ms
Mixing Quality: High
Reverb Level: 100%
Limiter Speed: Fast
Limiter Gain: High

My feeling is that the sampling rate was the issue, but after I made the
changes sound started up just fine.   The game works well after that.
