Well I can confirm this slowness for the desktop to show up, with or without desktop effects. uptodate: Oct 11-07. Dell D610, 1.6Mhz, 1024RAM, 915 Graphic.
Also need to click on the gnome-panel or the desktop to make the panel show up.
