This is actually still a problem in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (and possibly later releases -- I haven't checked). I just encountered it by accidentally closing the lid on my laptop while reinstalling Ubuntu.
Thankfully, resuming seemed to work properly, but I think this should still be fixed.
