I'm not sure about your setup, it might be not by samba, but samba can use pam auth. And just on the upgrade trying to restart smaba there are a lot of these in the log: sep 29 16:56:46 hostname lightdm[1585]: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so): /lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory sep 29 16:56:46 hostname lightdm[1585]: PAM adding faulty module: pam_kwallet.so Then also it seems that you have no networking or name resolution, that as well might affect you samba when restarting it: sep 29 16:56:44 hostname ntpdate[639]: Can't find host 0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org: Name or service not known (-2) And finally this is Wily which is out-of service in the meantime. I'd highly encourage you to upgrade to a supported release and check if things work there for you. Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.
