OK, so all appears to be working now. No idea which of the many actions I performed whilst trying to get the server back up and running actually fixed it, but I'm now back at 10.5 after having tried to downgrade to 10.4 (where it still didn't seem to be working).
No idea if I rebooted after the initial upgrade.
