added the following to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules
# Huawei, newer modems
ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1446", RUN+="usb_modeswitch
'%b/%k'"
and
sudo service udev restart
