You can check with a live-only session booted from a pendrive (or DVD disk) cloned using usb-creator-gtk, dd, or mkusb. The file
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades is exactly like the one I uploaded from my persistent live session. But it is not used, when 'Display immediately' is selected.
