During the installation I got the message about installer being run in UEFI
mode and to continue or go back.
I've had Ubuntu 15.10 installed on the laptop which was bought as Win 8 ready
machine.

I tried to install and preserve my old files only to have this shim jump
out when I started the system.

I've since wiped the disk and made a clean install so I don't know what
else to do to help here.

It was unusual to get that message, and it was unusual to get the error.

If you need me to check out a few things or need any further info please
tell me. Otherwise you can really close this as it isn't relevant
anymore.
