I just had the same problem, so it is not fixed, at least with the newer versions, ubuntu 16.4 and qgis 2.8.6; I did the same recommended by Karl Kastner:
sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu- qt and it worked great!
