Hi, I am the Debian maintainer of this package and in Debian sid, python- petsc4py depends on petsc 2.3.3 already. I don't use Ubuntu, but if I can help to make this package usable in Ubuntu, let me know. I don't know who is responsible for it here and who should fix it. But I think if you just copy the petsc2.3.3 and python-petsc4py from Debian sid, it should work and if not, please let me know.
