Thanks for both of you who sent replies. If you are using GNOME on gutsy, have scim-gtk2-immodule installed, and using im-switch to set the input method (and if it's a fresh install of gutsy, it will be using im-switch), would you please try the "im-switch -s scim" command and see if it avoids the crash?
(There may be problems of frozen input in nautilus and other programs after you change the im-switch setting, though.
