Binary package hint: pidgin
I was testing gutsy amd64 dvd 20071010.2. I started pigdin, wanting to
use IRC. I selected "add" as it suggests, and connected successfully to
irc.ubuntu.com.
However, it is not clear how a naive user is expected to go about
joining a channel. A user who knows the channel name (eg, #ubuntu-
testing) is not directed usefully to the proper UI element.
There are three windows shown, "Accounts", "freenode-connect", and
"Buddy List", none of which seem appropriate. The only one with a box
for typing in is "freenode connect".
In "freenode connect"'s Conversation menu, which seems like the right
thing, there is "Add". Conversation / Add asks me for a "screen name"
which it prefills to "freenode-connect" (what is this about?), an
"alias" and a "group". I have no idea which of these is the channel.
I then went through all of the other menus and found "Buddies" / "Join a
chat" which produces an appropriate prompt. When I fill in the prompt
it connected to #ubuntu-testing.
