I can confirm this sort of thing. Open a terminal and do: for i in `seq 1 300` ; do ( zenity --info & ) ; done
If compiz is running, you will eventually get back to the gdm login screen in a new X. If metacity is the window manager, things are okay. (In either case, the terminal reports errors from Xlib -- "maximum number of clients reached" -- but the X crash is only in compiz.)
