Public bug reported:
In Ubuntu Gnome 16.04, Gnome Shell used to remember how the windows were
positioned in a certain display configuration, and restored this
positioning when that configuration was encountered. For instance:
1. Use computer at work with two monitors (external and laptop's internal), one
above the other.
2. Unplug external monitor. All windows get rearranged so they all appear on
the internal monitor.
3. Without moving anything, put computer to sleep
4. At home, wake computer up, plug in similar external monitor, in the same
configuration as at work. The windows get back to where they were at step 1
With Ubuntu Gnome 16.10, Gnome Shell seems to resize all windows at step
4.
