I am on Gentoo and facing similar situation with kernel 4.4.26-gentoo. I got few times into stage where the audio worked with built-in speakers, but after plugin of headphones the sound stopped working and unplug didn't get speakers working again -> all sound gone.
NOTE: The headphones plugin supports both headphones and microphone at single jack hole.
