Ok then, I have rebooted Ubuntu again, and yes, as I expected I have now returned to the origianl situation:
When I select "System Settings->Sound" the output device in the dialog window shows as "Dummy Output" and when I press the "Test Sound" button no sound is heard from either front left or front right speaker. Running aplay -l gives: $ aplay -l aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
