I'll let @jsalisbury comment on the status of his backported patches. @jsalisbury, I'd also take this recently submitted patch from upstream kernel as well. It ensures that the VSS driver doesn't timeout any long running FREEZE operations too early. This should preclude the need for faulpeltz's patch in most cases, unless the FREEZE operation takes extraordinarily long (> 15 mins).
