on 16.10 it’s beyond repair:

16/10/Unity 8 and 16.10/GNOME/Wayland are healthy, kde is not
On login tracker kind of works, but after a while the 'tracker' entry
dies and tracker is no longer with us.
There are some new fancy race conditions, too:
on reset occasionally
(tracker daemon:13618): Tracker-CRITICAL **: Could not create proxy on the
D-Bus session bus, Error calling StartServiceByName for
org.freedesktop.Tracker1.Miner.Extract: Timeout was reached
on list processes occasionally:
