Re #10: This is probably a graphics driver related issue. If it works after a while, I guess one can live with it. In other cases, the symptoms are the same as described here (starting Unity fails, goes back to login screen), but the fixes suggested here don’t work. In that case, uninstalling the proprietary nvidia drivers and using nouveau instead seems to help.
