+1 to Vincent for posting this workaround. I had already purges and installed the relevant files:
ttf-mscorefonts-installer cabextract libmspack0 a few times with no success. So I figured I would run the final command Vincent suggested: sudo dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer So I purged and installed then dpkg-reconfigured fine. I checked /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/ and the files are there. Some symbolic links in that directory carry the date of installation so people can check the dates on the symbolic links to verify Vincent's workaround has worked. However, while Vincent's workaround successfully installs the mscorefonts, the file: /var/lib/update-notifier/user.d/data-downloads-failed which triggers the message everyone is seeing, remains. This might be a bug between update-notifier interactions with the apt or dpkg packages. Not sure if it should be filed as such. I'm going to remove that data-downloads-failed file and see if anything breaks.
