Christian: in order to provide some more information, I can tell you that 
gdesklets was working very well till more or less a week ago when it started to 
fail. 
In order to start from scratch I uninstalled/installed gdesklets and deleted my 
.gdesklets directory. 

Here's the output:
$ gdesklets 
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Cannot establish connection to daemon: timeout!
The log file might help you solving the problem.

The log file has this information:
/usr/lib/gdesklets/main/__init__.py:118: GtkDeprecationWarning: 
gtk.threads_init is deprecated, use gtk.gdk.threads_init instead
  gtk.threads_init()

Could not import tiling module!

My system is an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ running
Gutsy (updated).

These are the installed packages:
ii  gdesklets                                  0.35.3-4ubuntu2                
Architecture for desktop applets
ii  gdesklets-data                             0.35.6-1ubuntu1                
Applets for gdesklets
