When using the newtexsf package in Ubuntu 16.10 I get the following
error:
(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/newtxsf/omlntxsfmi.fd)
No file OMSntxsy.fd.

According to the following Debian bug report, this has been fixed in Debian
