Turns out that at least my problem has something to do with gstreamer mp3 decoding that manifests especially with low bitrate mp3s. But even higher bitrates pop/crackle every 1-2 seconds. Listening to the same MP3 with VLC causes no pops, Rhythmbox crackles. Tested with two soundcards (Intel integrated HDA on G33 and MAudio 2496) and a portable Sandisk Sansa player.
