I uninstalled my non-free drivers and went with the free ones too and the effects are working now too. Hurray for consistency! ;-) I see this as a work around. The real problem lies some place else and hopefully someone will be able to track it down. For now I'm happy to use it as it is and see how Compiz can help me work better.
