WORKAROUND / FIX by users kry0_bpr and Plutino at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=190310 :
Change the "(non-xdmcp)" Greeter= setting from gdmgreeter to gdmlogin in
both
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf
and
/etc/alternatives/gdm-config-derivative
and all is well again; both screens with nvidia driver.
