Update: I didn't realize this Desktop could distinguish between 'legacy
bios' and UEFI in the firmware (bios). My existing operating systems are
installed in legacy bios mode. When I booted from the USB installer
using firmware's boot chooser, I chose the UEFI version without
realizing the significance of doing so.

I have now installed 17.04, having booted the USB installer in legacy
bios mode. I do think that the installer could give much clearer
guidance than the current obscure error message it pops up near the
beginning of the installation process. I found the instructions here to
be very helpful indeed: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
