On upgrading to Gutsy a couple of weeks ago, sound stopped again. Oh
well, maybe next year ...

  Possibly related: Whenever I insert an audio CD, I get the error message
  "The currently selected audio profile is not available on your
  installation". The message is incorrect, as the list of GNOME audio
