As per http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html the ADS-2100e is not a supported scanner, so one would be forced to use the brscan driver from Brother's website. Hence, this issue may be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/383147 . To clarify, does this scanner work via your WORKAROUND using http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?
