As Ubuntu 12.10 is EOL as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases, and the WORKAROUND is already implemented in Ubuntu 16.04, I'm closing this report. When I try to select the scan resolution in one of the mentioned sane based GUIs, the dropdown menu for the scan resolution is empty and I can only scan with the default 75dpi resolution. (In my 12.04 LTS setup I can choose between different resolutions: 75dpi, 100dpi, 200dpi, ...).
