With avcodec-hw=none and vout=xcb_x11, VLC stopped showing its h264 error message when I try to play the video. Instead, the buttons and status bar flicker for a short moment, and repeating the playback command shows it looks like it's "playing" a video of near-zero length. (Other players can find half an hour of video in the file.) The messages window, set to "warnings" level, shows
