A quick update on this. After several restarts and package reinstallation nothing worked for me. However, unplugging my dongle from the USB and replugging it back in it worked. I read this is a common behavior on linux when it comes to wireless mouse dongles. Everything works as expected now, but I didn't realize I had to physically remove and re-insert my BT hardware to have it work. This is the dongle in question, Ubuntu being on their supported systems: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ZIILLI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
