Public bug reported:

Playing with PXE boot the Ubuntu Live CD works when using NFS.

Downside with NFS is that it isnt firewall friendly (out of the box) and
after the boot completes the client still requires access to the NFS
share.

A great fix would be if casper becomes capable of fetching
filesystem.squashfs through http during boot. This way no NFS is needed
and once booted the squashfs is then located in the system RAM so no
more network activity is needed (when starting applications in the live
CD environment).

The following page have provided a patch for this but it would be great
if this patch can be part of the official behaviour of casper:

boot#comment-25776
