Public bug reported:
I downloaded the RC of Gutsy the other day, popped in the CD, and
basically couldn't even install. The splash menu came up, so I could
select different ways to boot, and then the loading screen (usplash?)
loaded all the way, but then the screen suddenly goes black. My monitor
does not complain about input signal, or even go into power-saving mode,
it simply displays black. At this point, all I can do is hit the
'reset' button on my computer. This also happens with the "safe
graphics mode". The only way I was able to get around this was to use
my onboard graphics card (specs are below), which didn't work in
standard mode, but only worked in "safe graphics mode". The symptoms
were similar throughout the entire process.
Once I was able to boot, I switched back to my PCIe card, and I got the
same blank screen after usplash. What I had to do this time was boot
into recovery mode and install the nvidia drivers manually from there,
then switch to runlevel 5. Here are the specs from my computer.
Abit AN-M2 motherboard
Onboard graphics: NVIDIA 7025
PCIe graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB (EVGA)
Monitor: Dell 2407 WFP
Once the drivers were installed, everything so far has worked like a
charm, so congrats to the developers, especially on composite by default
(looks beautiful), but this problem was nearly a show-stopper, and would
be for many people with similar hardware issues.
Let me know if I can help track down what might be causing this to
happen.
