I have found the proximal problem (and solution), from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=92315
At some stage, xorg.conf had been modified to include resolutions larger than the native resolution of my screen, and I suspect that KDM tries to use the largest resolution listed. Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and selecting only possible resolutions solved the problem. My best guess as to what happened is as follows: - Something (XGL being set up for gutsy?) called to reconfigure xserver-xorg without any prompts. - My graphics card for some reason reported that it supported resolutions larger than my monitor supports - Xorg picked up on these - KDM picked the largest available resolution to display in - The graphics driver, attempting to display the large resolutions, put them over the edge of the monitor and scrolled onto them when the mouse moved that way. Leaving bug open as I don't know what caused the reconfiguration of Xorg, or why my system reported resolutions that it couldn't handle. -- XGL screen size too large https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151262 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
