After a complete reinstall but now using Xubuntu 17.04 (Zesty) I'm seeing the same problem.
Is this a timing issue? I now hear my NAS drive burst into life, presumably indexing the drive contents. When finished, smbc works correctly when restarted and allows me to navigate the file system.
