Laurent, thank you for the analysis and patch. It seems this patch essentially still applies even to the latest Debian release (cf. https://sources.debian.net/src/sane-backends/1.0.25-3/backend/net.c/) Have you tried talking to Debian or upstream to get the patch included there?
