OP tried again with amd64 ISO from today and everything worked. Then i386 and everything worked. Did download the original with http and they hadn't checked the hashes, so checked that and it was valid. Unfortunately, the media used originally had been overwritten, so we couldn't check for copy errors, but I'm inclined to believe that was the issue.
