I have this problem as well:
- My Dell Latitude D400 freezes when I close the lid (it then requires hard
reboot).
- However, I have no problem when display is turned off due to inactivity
timeout.
I am running Ubuntu 16.10 Server (32-bits) in forcepae mode.
I understand a patch has been developed. Has it been released?
