Had the same issue. I was unable to import my zpools after a clean install (I did a zpool export before the reinstall).
I'm running the following version of Ubuntu: $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS Release: 16.04 Codename: xenial I'm running the following kernel version: $ uname -a Linux UniServer 4.4.0-62-generic #83-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 18 14:09:55 UTC 2017 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux I've edited the file mentioned in post #6, rebooted, ran the commands and tried to check the status of the zpools. They were already imported! Issue solved.
