Thank you for the tip! Actually the CPU/GPU is pretty new, so the
support definitely improved since kernel 4.4 (I think that the support
for this GPU has been added in 4.3; kernel 4.4 had artifacts of hiding
mouse cursor, 4.8 works pretty decently, apart from the abovementioned
reported issue).
Installed 4.10 as suggested: Linux mavi-vaadin 4.10.0-041000-generic

Unfortunately the issue persists - once the primary display (laptop display) is
turned off, secondary display FPS drops to 1-0.5 FPS and cannot be reasonably
worked with.
