I created /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf containing:
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 probe_mask=1 model=dell-headset-multi

Now it works fine, plug headset in, take it out no problem.

Linux deene500-xps 4.9.11_1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Feb 19 01:13:39 UTC 2017 x86_64 
GNU/Linux

I don't know if the microphone works, but that's not a concern of me on
this laptop.
