Ignore my last comment; I had chosen manual partitioning and it turns
out that ubiquity is just extraordinarily unfriendly when it comes to
EFI installations. Specifically, it didn't warn me it would completely
fail if I didn't create an ESP partition, instead crashing spectacularly
and supplying no useful information about what the problem might be ten
minutes later when it got round to trying to install grub.
